Genomcore at ESHG 2026: from the lab to the clinical decision
What the sector debated at ESHG and why data infrastructure is the conversation that matters.

The European Human Genetics Conference is the sector's leading annual gathering in Europe. It brings together the continent's scientific and clinical community to debate the state and future of genomics: variant classification, long-read sequencing, pharmacogenomics, large language models applied to clinical data, and the ethical and regulatory frameworks reshaping the field.

What we observed on the ground
This year's edition confirmed a trend we have been tracking in the field for some time: the sector's conversation has matured. The question is no longer whether AI can help in genomics. The question is how, with what guarantees, and on what data foundation.
The most relevant discussions were not centered on variant analysis, but on what comes before and after: data structuring, storage, computation and governance. Institutions such as Genomics England, UK Biobank and major Spanish public health systems — CatSalut, SERMAS, SERIS, the Valencia Community — were present in force, representing that reality: scale demands infrastructure, not just analytical tools.
Pharmacogenomics and large-scale language models applied to clinical data attracted considerable scientific interest. On the clinical side, reference figures such as Encarna Guillén and leading centers including the Carlo Besta Institute and Hospital La Paz underlined the need for data management systems capable of matching real clinical complexity.
